Paraquasia    Life Is Like That   Yearnings   String Quartets  Blood & Diamonds   Insecurity

Of Blood and Diamonds was written in late 2004 after (inadvertently) reading a number of books about the European colonization of Africa.  So much of Africa has been exploited, including its people, land and minerals, but there is an Afrcian soul that cannot be displaced by technology and commerce.  My intention was to create a bittersweet mood and imagery with this historical perspective in mind.  The first and third movements use an Algerian scale; the second movement is Locrian.  It was performed April 29, 2005 with other pieces from the Irregular Resolutions composer collective at the Victorian Englander House in San Francisco.

I think Carol Belcher (piano), Harry Bernstein (flute), Nick Carlin (cello) and Nik Phelps (English horn) did a great job!
