As a part of MED'1.ATE's SURROUND>SOUND series (Musical Director Alan So), Deciduous was performed at The Lab in San Francisco on Friday, July 7, 2006 along with two other live soundscapes.
Deciduous is a short (20min) ambient piece that manipulates field recordings of a forest. During the performance, a "video painting" tranforms very gradually, almost imperceptibly, along with simultaneous changes in the soundscape. I originally explored these themes while at the Djerassi Resident Artist Program with The Poignant Reminder and tree/sigh. However, instead of music placed in a redwood forest, as with tree/sigh, samples of the Djerassi redwood forest were collected in May 2006 for use at The Lab. All of the sounds in this piece, including musical phrases, have been derived from the redwood forest: wind through the trees, water over rocks, and birds singing overhead all have rich harmonic content. Live manipulation will move and modify sounds among six equidistant speakers. Here's an example of one of the forest recordings that is manipulated and layered during live performance: ![]()
As a part of the series, I appeared on KPFA along with two other artists (justino and Damon Smith) the night of July 4 on No Other Radio Network. Great fun! Here are two tracks from the program and three photos:

Below are screen shots from the "video painting" (click for a larger image). I've also included MP3s of sound snippets from the first two and last screen shots. We used Kenaxis software for the six-speaker set-up. Many thanks, once again, to the Djerassi RAP for their continued support. Initial photo by Joyce Graves (Mendocino Gardens, CA); thanks, Roo! A DVD of this soundscape/video painting is available - just ask!
