Pacific Afternoons

...is a string quartet commissioned by Verity Dierauf. It was performed by the Picasso Quartet at the Irregular Resolutions concert October 30, 2010.

While I was considering what to write for the October concert, Verity Dierauf agreed to give me one of her marvelous paintings in return for the new piece. You can find the painting by going to her image gallery (Creations Series #54).

During June and July, my neighborhood wrote the piece. Of course, there's a bit of fog in all four movements. The first piece was started on a Friday, and I was struck by some of the classic characters on Muni: an indignant, well-dressed woman and some young kids. Sunday I took a very pleasant walk to Ninth and Irving, and Wednesday was a gorgeous day that started out with some very dark, wet and thick fog that cleared around noon. Tuesday Joyce and I walked down the hill, through Golden Gate Park, to the ocean, and then took the N-Judah home. It was a busy day in the Park and at the beach, but it all seemed to fit together.

Now if I could just write a waltz for my mother, all would be well. I had good intentions; all of these pieces started in a medium-tempo 3/4 meter. I guess my inspirations moved too fast for a waltz though, and the music ended up as something else. Sorry, Mom!

For each movement there's a recording from the concert as well as a full score:
